Was SPG chief's exit linked to RTI by PM's wife Jashodaben?

Special Protection Group (SPG) chief K. Durga Prasad has been
unceremoniously removed from his post, leading to speculation about
the reasons for his sudden exit from the force.

The Special Protection Group provides security to the Prime Minister,
former prime ministers and their families.

The removal of Prasad, a senior IPS officer, happened in haste while
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Nepal to attend the SAARC summit.

shortly after PM Narendra Modi's wife Jashodaben (right) made her
enquiries

Incidentally, the move came soon after interviews given by Modi's
estranged wife Jashodaben about her security and other privileges she
enjoys by virtue of being the PM's spouse. She had filed an RTI
application, seeking information and asking for the formal order under
which she has been provided with security.

The information about the interviews remained a secret and did not
reach the prime minister. It is still not clear whether his wife is
provided security by the SPG, or whether she is guarded by the state
police.

Prasad's tenure had formally ended on November 2 and S.S. Chaturvedi,
the next seniormost officer, will look after the charge till the
appointment of a successor.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has directed that the charge of
SPG director may be looked after by the next senior-most officer till
the appointment of a suitable successor, a government statement said.

Prasad was appointed the SPG director in November 2011. The name of
the Andhra Pradesh cadre IPS officer (1981 batch) had been cleared by
the Appointments Committee of Cabinet, headed by the then prime
minister Manmohan Singh.

Besides the PM, the SPG guards former PMs and their immediate family.
Earlier, there was a buzz that Prasad could be posted as Special
Director General in the Central Reserve Police Force. But with his
sudden removal, it is now unclear whether the officer will be given a
significant post.

Meanwhile, the Congress has taken a dig at the PM over the Jashodaben
episode. Congress MP Madhusudan Mistry, who had contested against PM
Narendra Modi from Vadodara, made an attempt to raise the issue in the
Rajya Sabha but was prevented from doing so.

A Congress member on Wednesday tried to raise in Rajya Sabha the issue
of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's wife Jashodaben filing an RTI
application seeking details of security provided to her, but the Chair
disallowed it. Madhusudan Mistry (Cong) tried to raise the matter
during Zero Hour, but Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said, "You give
notice."

Kurien said the Chairman had allowed 15 issues to be raised during
Zero Hour on Tuesday and all the issues listed were important. Mistry,
however, insisted that he had given a notice to raise the issue. "If
your name is not there, give notice again. Don't trouble," the Deputy
Chairman said. Mistry had lost to Modi by a huge margin of over 5.70
lakh votes in the Lok Sabha elections from Vadodara and later got
elected to Rajya Sabha.

Earlier, senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh wanted to raise the
recruitment scam in Madhya Pradesh, but was disallowed as he had not
given prior notice. He alleged that huge corruption had taken place in
recruitment for government jobs in Madhya Pradesh. Kurien asked if had
given a notice for the Zero Hour mention. "You are a very senior
member. Give notice to the Chairman if you want to raise the issue."

The recruitment scam reportedly involved manipulation in selection
process for government jobs conducted by Madhya Pradesh Professional
Examination Board, popularly known as Vyapam. Singh was joined by
fellow Congress members from MP including Motilal Vora. Minister of
State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the issue was
a state subject and an inquiry was being conducted under supervision
of the High Court.
