During the Kiss of Love protest in Cochin, the Shiv Sena and the Sanghis came out with lathis and swords to confront the youth who dared to kiss in a peaceful protest. In Cochin, a section of the Muslim fundamentalists also supported the Sanghis. Before, the Kiss on Street Protest in Calicut, the Hanuman Sena and other Sanghis announced their intention of violence in public by putting up posters all over Calicut that they would undertake a `naked parade’ of those who kiss in public. They could not do that and fortunately, the Muslim fundamentalists backed out from supporting the Sanghis. During the recent Kiss against Fascism protest in Alappuzha a few days back, the Shiv Sena came with canes to beat up the peaceful protesters who were protesting within the accepted spaces of public dissent under the Indian Constitution. The protest in Alappzha is a new turn in the history of the struggle of the youth against moral policing, communalism, gender violence, discrimination of sexualities and above all the growing fascist forces in Kerala. CPI(M) leader Thomas Isaac came out openly to support the struggle. But in all these three protests, there was one thing that was common: The police arrested or became violent and abusive on the peaceful protesters instead of taking action on those who were initiating violence. Now it is clear that the orders have come from above. It is clear that the Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, whose soft Hindutva interests within the Congress is well known, has played a role to facilitate the actions of Shiv Sena in Kerala. Now, it is time to enquire into what is Chennithala’s interest in the growth of Shiv Sena in Kerala? Let us wait and see on the coming Valentine’s Day.
