I/III. Now, Cong decides to tail Modi on all foreign tours TNN | Apr 18, 2015, 03.03 AM IST
NEW DELHI: Congress on Friday said the party will keep a spokesman ready in every country that the prime minister visits in future to rebut his "false claims", slamming Narendra Modi for suggesting on his foreign tour that "India has stopped begging now" and that it was known as "scam India" during the previous government. Congress spokesman Anand Sharma said Modi had broken the convention of not taking domestic politics abroad, advising him to behave like a PM and not an "RSS pracharak". Henceforth, if he does it again on foreign soil, a Congress leader or spokesman will be present there and will respond immediately," Sharma said. Congress accused Modi of speaking a blatant lie by claiming that his visit to Canada was the first by an Indian PM in 42 years. "It was a state visit, and the two released a joint statement after their bilateral engagements," he said while flashing a copy of the joint statement.*** [Emphasis added.] The party demanded an apology from Modi for accusing previous governments of creating a "mess" in the country while speaking at an event in Canada. "The PM should apologize. We have honoured the convention so far and never spoken against him when he is on foreign soil. The PM should realize that he goes abroad as the PM of the country and not as a pracharak of BJP and RSS," Sharma said. "It shows his sick mentality. He has again broken the tradition of not taking domestic politics abroad and has again made malicious attacks on previous governments," the Congress spokesman added. The party charged that Modi had painted a picture which suggested that the country was known only for corruption and scams before he came to office, accusing the PM of "lowering the dignity" of his office. When asked about the citation written by US President Barack Obama eulogizing the PM in an international magazine, Sharma said, "He can even mislead Obama. That he has done." He claimed that the Modi government had actually "drastically reduced" the outlays for education, especially primary education, mid-day meal scheme, women and child development and SC and tribal sub-plan. WATCH MODI's FULL SPEECH [Video] Taking objection to the Prime Minister's attack on the Congress in foreign soil, Sharma said, "The Prime Minister is the country's representative abroad. Maligning the previous government and his predecessor in foreign soil is not just against convention and in bad taste, but it also lowers the dignity of the PM," he said. In an interview to The Indian Express, Sharma also said it was only because of a mature and responsible Opposition that the present government could pass so many Bills in Parliament. "The Congress voted with the government on the Insurance (Amendment) Bill," he pointed out. However, when the BJP was in opposition, its leaders in the two houses Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj justified disruption as a legitimate action in a parliamentary democracy. On Thursday, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said on Twitter, "When a head of state visits abroad, he represents the whole nation. Modi's speech is divisive, defamatory, malicious and not based on facts." Modi had launched an attack on the UPA in Paris too, where he said the previous government had allocated coal blocks like one gives away a pen or a handkerchief, resulting in losses of lakhs of crores of rupees. Rahul Gandhi is angry. What is getting his goat is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches abroad. The Congress vice-president is unhappy with Modi's habit of criticising former Congress governments on foreign soil. So, the Gandhi scion, fresh and rejuvenated from a 56-day sabbatical in an unknown destination, has hit upon an idea. Next time onwards, a Congress representative will go to every country Modi visits to run a parallel show to counter his "lies". Gandhi has already so instructed his party leaders. -- Peace Is Doable -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
