On this day of April 28th, Madhusudhan Das was born. Madhusudhan Das played a key role in the formation of Orissa state which was the first state in India to be formed on the basis of language. Hence, he was known as the `father of Orissa'. He was the first lawyer from Orissa, the first educated graduate as well as post graduate from the region. He was the first person to travel abroad from Orissa. While studying in Calcutta, he was influenced by various radical thinkers and groups during the time of the British rule. He was also influenced by the the notions of justice in Jesus Christ and he converted himself to Christianity. What we have to understand is that the `father of Orissa' was a converted Christian. Orissa was also one the first states to make conversion an illegal affair.Many other states followed with the result of the pressures from Sangh Parivar. As an atheist, I have every right to convert to any religion of my choice. Blocking my freedom of choice is violating the basic democratic tenets of the Indian Constitution. However, the Sangh Parivar has tried to convert Adivasi Christians and Dalit Christians to Hinduism by force by showing axes on their neck. If conversion is illegal, then these violent goondas are going moving around freely. The converted Adivasi Christians and Dalit Christians are still going to churches to pray. You can not convert anybody by force. None of the criminals of Sangh Parivar who threatened and converted Adivasis and Dalits from Christianity to Hinduism are behind bars. Baba Saheb Ambedkar said that conversion is a weapon for the marginalized, In this context, It may be too important to remember and respect the role of Madhusudhan Das and the role that he played in Orissa.
