The leader of Congress in Kerala, VM Sudheeran has come out with a statement yesterday that for the following assembly elections, there will be two criteria for choosing the candidates: 1. Possibility of winning, and 2. Public acceptance. If these are the criteria for the choice of candidates, I would appeal to consider two candidates for the Congress Party in Kerala: 1. Narendra Modi, and 2. Naveen Patnaik. Both have a capacity to generate thousands of crores from millionaires – enough money to buy anybody including mainstream press, TV channels and all those who can decide their success. Both have a proven record on the way they have dealt with grave issues like communalism and globalisation. And if you feel that they do not speak Malayalam, don’t worry. Naveen Patnak is probably the only Chief Minister in India who cannot speak his own mother tongue, Oriya. Yet, both of them are sure bets for success. Some of the political parties are also trying to provide more opportunities for youth. Women candidates will be given preference so long as they can be controlled by upper caste men. The proven records of involvement of the candidates in social issues and their capacity to deliver promises to the people is no issue at all. After all, a cand!idate who is a failure in this mainstream game of democracy can be easily forgotten in history!
