Official and unofficial experts on Coastal Regulation Zone Notification
(CRZ), please enlighten me. Isn’t the proposed statue of Shivaji in the sea
going to be a major violation of CRZ norms?
This is going to be the world’s tallest statue. The height will be 192
metres. Hence it would be taller than the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai
Patel in Gujarat.
The idea about the statue first emerged in 1980. In 2004, the budget was
around Rs 100 crore, which jumped to Rs 700 crore in 2009, Rs 1,400 crore
in 2013 and Rs 3,600 crore in 2016.
Maharashtra state is boiling with thousands of malnutrition deaths among
Adivasis. Can’t this money be used to prevent such deaths? Can’t this money
be used to provide free education and free health care for the needy? Rs.
3600 crores could pay for a micro-irrigation programme to bring water to
thousands of farmers over two years. It can prevent farmers' suicides. Will
Shavaji be angry if you do that?
The project has been opposed both by the fishing community and the
environmentalists, since the effort would disrupt marine life and ecology
of the Arabian Sea. But the real question is: What are your priorities in
Governance?
