Respected Sirs,

Today's Indian Express, web edition, carries a news item (ref.: <
https://indianexpress.com/article/india/in-mp-this-time-under-cong-three-held-under-nsa-for-cow-slaughter-5571019/>)
to the effect that three people - named Nadeem, Shakeel and Azam, in the
Khandwa town of Madhya Pradesh, were arrested under the provisions of the
MP Prohibition of Cow Slaughter Act, on the charge of slaughtering a cow.
One of the accused/arrested - Nadeem, is reportedly a repeat offender.
The subject report also informs that the Bajrang Dal had agitated over the
issue and there is a possibility of communal violence.

The report further informs that the National Security Act was subsequently
invoked against accused/arrested.
While cow slaughter is an offence in the state of Madhya Pradesh and the
state police should, no doubt, act appropriately, within the framework of
law, against any (alleged) breach of law and take the possibility of any
consequent outbreak of a larger law and order problem into account, the
invoking of the National Security Act (ref.: <
https://mha.gov.in/sites/default/files/National_Security_Act1980.pdf>),
which is primarily meant to deal with India's "security" in relation with
any foreign power, is transparently irrational and disproportionate to the
(alleged) subject crime and thereby quite unwarranted.

Hence, your kind attention is drawn to the case for prompt intervention and
necessary remedial action.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

Sukla Sen
