*The Decline(?) of the Indian Left*
*In the context of just concluded state polls*
*A short exploratory note*

I. Institutionalised leftism is, on the face of it, on the retreat
worldwide - despite some significant divergences here and there.
Regardless of the mighty advances made by feminism, ecological movements
and anti-racist resistances.

II. Economic neo-liberalism has emerged as the ruling doctrine of the era.

III. The consequent sharpening of socio-economic inequities and resultant
conflicts have, instead of triggering social revolutions, led to the rise
of various versions if right-wing authoritarian populism - spearheaded by
"strong", and charismatic, leaders.

IV. The Indian Left - much like various shades of Left elsewhere, have, by
and large, failed to grapple with the fact of dominance of economic
neo-liberalism and consequent soaring aspirations of ever expanding
segments of the populace coupled with the reality of economic ruination of
many.

V. Of course, Bengal has its own distinctive features - that deserve
special attention.
But, beyond minute details, it's broadly following the same pattern.
The Left, here, miserably failed to succeed as a ruthless champion of
economic neo-liberalism while mouthing contrary jargons.

VI. In Kerala, for now, Vijayan has been able to negotiate between economic
neo-liberalism and welfarism.
In a way, so has Mamata in West Bengal.
In addition, both - the latter far more so, could gain the confidence of
the threatened minorities.
Specific personal qualities also did count.

VII. But the challenges of rising majoritarianism as a deceptive solution -
to both (large sections of) the elite and the subalterns, to problems
caused by economic neo-liberalism remain quite untamed - even on the rather
short term.
We may very well keep encountering periodic convulsions.

VIII. In India we're right now faced with the looming doom of "India"
itself.
Has got to be fought back on "as is where is" basis - joining hands with
whoever is ready to fight.
