Here goes the pledge of the No First Use (NFU) just out of the window? Without any mutual - or even third-party, verifiability - and, in the subject case, even a scope for that, the utter fickleness of any such promise is self-evident. (Even in case of Indo-Pak conflicts, there're credible reports that both the parties were readying for the unmentionable, despite India's public promise to the contrary.)
The NFU may, however, still be useful, if at all, in cooling down the temperature between two adversaries. *Much more than that, it recognises the grave consequences of a nuclear attack and, thereby, helps to delegitimise the nuclear weapon*. Of course, this is a *threat* only in case Japan does militarily intervene in case of a Chinese aggression against Taiwan. Not to mistake, there're quite a few "if"s. *It's rather inconceivable that someone from China would issue such threats without the endorsement of the establishment*. Moreover, in all probability, it's meant to dissuade Japan from coming to the aid of Taiwan and bully it into submission. There's no reason to assume that the Chinese do not realise the horrendousness of the consequences that may follow in case they opt to make good the subject threat. But, even then, *such threats may trigger a spiralling chain which may, eventually, go out of hand.* Even if it - *the open threat to nuke a people, quite unprecedented at least in recent decades (with the exception of North Korea)* - comes from a relatively lower level, presumably on purpose, *the peace movements worldwide must roundly condemn it.* *It's too dangerous and too nauseating.* It's also probably high time for the UNGA to recognise Taiwan as a constituent unit of the world body as it has done in case of Palestine. The "exceptional theory" is the controversial view held by many Chinese officials that China's 'self-defense only' use of atomic bombs doesn't apply in the case of Japan, thus an "exception" can be made. ... *Often Beijing's most bellicose threats to external enemies are issued through state media channels, in order to be made indirectly. Given how quickly this latest threatening social media video went viral, and its origins on a popular Chinese military channel, it's likely it had "official" approval for release somewhere within the top echelons of the CCP*.
