[This Westinghouse business is going on for far too long. In the process, even the allotted site has shifted from Mithivirdi to Kovvada. Local farmers and others at both the sites are strongly opposed. The proposal for the former, thus, got formally dropped. The SMR thing is, however, new and requires to be closely watched. India's entry into the NSG is contingent on a green signal from China -- quite unlikely in the near future. Nothing new as regards the US support.
As an aside, the 2008 Indo-US nuclear agreement put a rather abrupt and clear end to India's penal ostracisation from the global nuclear market since the '74 nuclear explosion, further reinforced in the wake of explicit nuclearisation in May 1998. Definitive moves for nuclear power plants being built by vendors from three countries -- two from the US and one each from France and Russia -- immediately followed. Out of these, till now, only the Russian proposal has actually materialised and is still going further ahead.
