What about adding something in the class file that will do that? Then
you can specify \j or \ae in the tex template and have it to affect all
the score notation wholescale for the piece. Users can set this option
and not have to worry about a mix-match.

By the way, can you please test the new Windows installer on
http://download.gna.org/gregorio/releases/2.3/? It should remove the old
installation...
