Henry, It was the latest version of gregorio. At this point I dont remeber where I pulled it from...(the gregorio website, or a repository). I tried to go back a version and I get the same error. I am on ubuntu 12.04. If I could get texlive and gregorio ...I am not sure where to pull them from, that will work with ubuntu 12 then i could just reload everything form scratch. There seems to be a lot of info out there but it is confusing. I know ubuntu is still using the older version of texlive(2009) I used the backport ppa to 2012 and that may be part of the problem.
