Dear William,
It definitely looks like you have more than one version of gregoriotex
installed.
In the latest version of gregorio,
/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/gregoriotex/gregoriotex.sty should not exist.
What I recommend is this:
1. Uninstall the two packages you installed after building (using
"dpkg -r gregorio gregoriotex").
2. Run the command "locate gregoriotex".
3. Remove all gregoriotex directories (and with them, their files) that
are underneath /usr/share/texmf
4. Run "kpsewhich -all gregoriotex.sty" to make sure there are no such
files any more.
5. Reinstall the two packages that you built.
N.B. If you are willing to trust a command the comes from the internet,
you can accomplish step 3 with the command
sudo find /usr/share/texmf -name gregoriotex -type d -exec rm -fr {} +
I hope it helps.
