Dear Conor,

In general, if you aim to write documents with elements (names, longer 
quotations, etc.) from different languages, I strongly recommend using XeTeX 
(or XeLaTeX) with directly uses unicode (and also suports some very beautiful 
old fonts with historical ligatures). Switching from LaTeX to XeLaTeX usually 
boils down to changing two-three lines in your preamble
