I haven't used Cygwin in a while, but I'm fairly certain what you need
here is gcc-core. That should contain the needed compilers.
In each case, what you're looking for in each of the named packages is
the main or core program. Much of what shows up under the headings in
the Cygwin package lists are add-ons. At least, that's my memory of the
situation.
And yes, the download can get pretty big (especially if you start
installing lots of the add-ons). You have to remember that installing
Cygwin is basically like putting a command-line version of another
operating system on your Windows machine. While not as big as a full
blown OS, it still takes quite a bit of space.
Your other option is to use the Windows installer for Gregorio. It
won't be the latest svn version, but it is easier to install. Actually,
along those lines, I'm hoping to update that installer in the next week
or so. I finished with some school commitments this morning and have
some time now to iron out the TeXworks configuration issues.
