The TeX Live install is at /usr/share/texmf-dist. I guess the kpsewhich
output could be useful after some pretty heavy parsing, although I have no
idea how consistent it might be across distros.
First, what concerns me in Fr. Ryckeboer's case is that TEXMF is not

Based on your quoted text, it looks like I'm seeing things in Fr's email
that you're not. He got:
TEXMFLOCAL: /usr/local/share/texmf
