This is certainly possible in the TeX, but depending on the exact form
of alignment wanted could be anything from simple to extremely difficult.
The simplest alignment possibility would be for the left edge of the
text to align with the alignment point for the notes above (generally
the center of the first glyph). Much like syllable centering (which
puts the whole syllable in the middle part register), this simply
requires putting the whole syllable into just one of the part registers
(the last).
The next level would be for the first syllable part (everything which
preceeds the vowel) to become the alignment portion of the syllable.
This just requires mapping the middle and final portion of the syllable
into the last part register and the first portion into the middle part.
Another step more difficult would be for the first letter of the
syllable to always be aligned under the alignment point of the notes
above. In this case one would need to take the full syllable, extract
the first letter and put it in the middle part register and then put the
rest in the last part register.
Actual left alignment of the notes and text would require a new spacing
code which aligns the the two.
Can you be more specific on exactly what sort of alignment your
colleague wants?
