Gregorio works fine on a Windows PC. I have personally tested it on XP, 7, and 8.1 in the past and was able to typeset documents just fine. There is no need for you to switch platforms unless you want to.

The error you posted indicates that you tried to run a gabc file through the LaTeX interpreter. gabc files are not properly formatted LaTeX files. They are a plain-text representation of the chant which the gregorio command-line tool converts into a gtex document which LuaLaTeX can understand with the help of the GregorioTeX package. Of course, since a single project may include multiple scores, a gtex file is not a complete document, but rather a input source which is included in a complete document. Indeed, GregorioTeX provides the command \gregorioscore (as of 4.0, \includescore in earlier versions) for doing just this. This command has the advantage of being able to look at the source gabc file, recognizing when it needs to be run though the command line tool, and automatically doing so for you. This allows you to avoid messing with the command line altogether.

Since you're using TeXworks, then I strongly suggest you read and follow the directions here:

http://gregorio-project.github.io/introduction-editor.html

They provide you with a complete description of the work-flow when using an editor like TeXworks. Since 4.0 is still in beta, the command names on the page have not yet been updated, but 4.0 has backwards compatible deprecated function names built-in to ease the transition from older versions so what's there should work just fine.
