Please search your system for files named "gretlpre.tex" and
delete them all. The defaults that are built into gretl should
work correctly. The mechanism for constructing the gretl TeX
preamble can be found in the source file texprint.c

http://gretl.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gretl/gretl/lib/src/texprint.c?view=log

The gretl manual should be updated (latin1 is no longer a sensible
default encoding) and should make this point clear: putting a
modified version of the TeX preamble in place is something that
should be done only by experts in the use of LaTeX.
