With "speakup.(or _)synth=apollo" you mean neither
"speakup.synth=apollo" nor "speakup_synth=apollo" work for you?

The speakup modules aren't part of the initramfs but instead are
loaded on request in userspace.

What does happen if you manually invoke 'modprobe speakup_apollo'
after booting? You have speakup-modules-2.6.31-grml installed on
your box, right?
