I released a Perl version of chem. You'll find it in
<groff-source-top>/contrib/chem.
It is compatible to the original awk version of chem from Brian Kernighan, but
has
some additions and error corrections.

There are many example files, they are actually installed in
/usr/local/share/doc/groff/1.19.3/examples/chem. Its subdirectory 122/ stores
the examples from the classical chem book 122.ps. All examples are compatible
to both versions of chem, but the original awk chem has trouble with some
examples due to errors.

The Perl version works with all examples except 122/ch6b_dna.chem. It has
trouble with handling long [...] block constructs. Maybe someone can help me
to fix this.

The easiest way to handle chem is with groffer:
  chem example | groffer
will display the example in pdf mode.

Enjoy
