Hi, here is a set of instructions for adding a chess font to groff and a macro set (which solves the problem in a less sophisticated way to that as the one posted by Tadziu Hoffmann) - but as it was written from scratch and so it can be added to GNU Groff if others want.. http://floppsie.comp.glam.ac.uk/Glamorgan/gaius/web/groff_chess.html the macro set does contain (at least one known bug) namely that the bottom labelled x-axis is not always located at the correct y position (depending upon the choice of font size).
