It's "collateral damage". The default is for gs to try to look at the orientation of the text, and then rotate the page so that the majority of the text is horizontal. You can prevent this by setting "AutoRotatePages" to "None" in the distillerparams. > However, is it possible to fix it at the groff level. I don't think so.
