Looks like you can't use automatically numbered footnotes in a table;
not with ms, at any rate.

Do we document that?

I guess we don't.  But I'll bet I once knew about it, which is why the
footnotes in the "Document Control Settings" table of ms.ms uses
explicit symbolic footnote marks.
