Haha, I can only imagine =) I think this mail thread should provide
enough information to folks running into a similar issue without
being an official maintainer recommendation.

I fully agree! There is a preCheck phase for nixpkgs that is exactly
intended to modify the test environment to the needs of the package.
So all good from my and nixpkgs end in regards to 1.24.1!
