I solved it.. before I saw your message I opened/closed SuperDooper
(with which I think Growl comes bundled), then Growl disappeared from
sys pref. I then installed Growl. It then appeared in sys pref. Sys
pref then decided to crash one more time(!!) But after that worked
perfectly!

Very odd little story, not exactly sure how it happened (maybe the
SuperDooper bundle messed up), but glad to have Growl back!
