We're not a company. The only update reminder we have is one inside Growl itself. You can configure automatic update checking in the About tab of Growl.
I don't know anything about hidden files. You probably need to explain things a bit more, this message seems to be talking about 2 or 3 different things that maybe aren't related to Growl itself.
