That forum post isn't much of an answer.  Since leaving the update 
check enabled is now bad juju on Tiger, we'll never know if you issue 
a security or any other for it.  ....Aside: That burning sensation is 
the collective feeling you're getting from all the people that use 
Growl on Tiger on dial-up or other services where they pay dearly for 
their bandwidth.

Running older Mac OS under emulators works quite well, actually!

I donno about the OP.... but several of my clients still run/require 
both Tiger and Mac OS 9 (booted, not Classic!).  They have expensive 
table plotters, printers, and other i/o devices, that just don't work 
in Leopard or Snow Leopard.  Things get even more complicated when 
you try to share files:  Apple dumped all but AFP v3 from Snow 
Leopard, and broke Samba -- which makes newer Macs that (will) 
require SL problematic.

Of course, then there's all the folx out there that ain't rich enough 
to buy new Macs or all the app updates...
