We already have an updater. Your objection applies equally to it, so your 
objection really has nothing to do with Sparkle specifically.

Sparkle would actually be a benefit to you, because once you disable the in-app 
update check, you could have a separate application that checks all installed 
applications' appcasts for updates you may want. Then you would not only be in 
control of updating, but have ready access to the feed of updates.

Can you not already manage the preference without a manifest?
