Good suggestion. I assume you mean that one could think that the Growl 
Uninstaller uninstalled the Extras as well?

It's a system by which applications can notify you when things happen. This 
page explains in more detail and gives examples:

Do you use Dropbox? The pre-1.0 versions would reinstall Growl whenever you 
launched them, which typically means whenever you restart. You can save 
yourself a lot of hassle by upgrading Dropbox to 1.0 and then uninstalling 
Growl one more time.

If you don't use Dropbox, what else has installed Growl on your Mac?
