Growl isn't a source of notifications; it's a display mechanism for use by
applications that are sources of notifications. Mail clients, file transfer
programs, IM clients, Twitter clients, backup tools, and so on.

In order for Growl to do anything, you need applications that support Growl
(i.e., send it notifications).

In order for Growl 1.3 to do anything, you need applications that are
compatible with Growl 1.3. Many are; many are not, despite the Growl Project's
efforts to get them to upgrade to a 1.3-compatible version of the Growl
framework.

Applications that are (and/or were) compatible with Growl are listed here:

        http://growl.info/applications.php

As I mentioned, many of those apps are behind on compatibility, so if you are
using any applications that support Growl and they're still not showing up,
you'll probably need to contact their developers.
