It really looks like a bad plugin. In Finder can you the Go menu and select "Go to Folder…" and paste this in:
~/Library/Application Support/Growl/Plugins/ If the folder exists, which plugins do you see there? One of these may be causing a problem possibly. This folder doesn't get deleted if you remove Growl normally.
