Ok, so if they have got as far as Growl's apps pane, they have can at least talk to Growl. The next thing to do is double-check there aren't any preferences in the apps you need to enable (I'm going to assume that you haven't disabled them in Growl's own preferences), eg. in Dropbox's case, make sure "Show Dropbox notifications" is ticked in Dropbox preferences. Next, make sure you're causing an event within the apps that is known to trigger a notification. If you don't know what those are, often the titles of the notifications that have been registered in Growl's apps pane should give you a good clue.
