What do you mean that you can't update to the newest version? You mean that
you have 1.2.2 and in order to get 1.4 you'll need to purchase Growl in the
app store? If so, then yes you'll need to do that if you want Growl, or
you'll need to build Growl from source.

The update notification can be disabled if you are on 1.2.2 and do not wish
to purchase Growl. There will be no other updates to Growl 1.2.x.
