I have found that the newest version of Growl does not play well with the Growl New Message Notification 0.4.2 extension. It loses communication to the extension. Also I have gotten up in the morning and found Growl is no longer showing in the menu bar and not working as it crashed over night. Found nothing in Console app.
I Hope the Growl people will have answers to make this extension work again for you. Meantime, I just wanted to let you know that Thunderbird has also its own Growl notification function. I disabled "Growl New Message Notification 0.4.2" a long time ago, and it still seems to work with latest version of Growl.
