Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your helpful comments! Weeell, not really solving the issue
- but at least explaining why not. Makes me feel a little less stupid ;)

To "disable" XUL notification in TB 24 (OS X version), go to Thunderbird
Preferences (General), and un-tick all boxes under "New mail" (or similar).
Running the German version, so I don't know the exact terms used in the
English version... but it's easy to find.

Sadly, this does not really disable notifications, just makes them
invisible. Neither does it bring back Growl. Yann, I tried the same - same
result. Growl New Message Notification actually still communicates with TB
(error message and all), but - no display of notifications :((

The thing that was soooo cool about Growl - Coming back from wherever to my
desk, I could see all new e-mails at one glance - no matter how long I was
away, or what was up front when I left. I could even see them from my
bathroom ;) XUL notifications in TB look dry... but I could probably live
with that - if they just stayed on the screen.

In the OS X version of TB 24, the TB preferences window has no Options
button to further control the behavior of the XUL thing. On/off, animate
the dock or don't, play a sound or don't. That's it. I've seen screenshots
of TB under Windows, showing an extra Options button where you can
supposedly set more controls, like appearance and duration. Duration being
the crucial parameter.

Yes this thread should definitely continue in the Thunderbird forum...

Anyways, thanks to all again - I'm smarter now ;)

Alex
