This is also incredibly useful in case you want to select a specific device in a RAID1 setup (if supported, for instance Linux swraid with 0.9 or 1.0 metadata). While it would be safe to read from devices, there currently is no way to point grub directly to a specific device other than hardcoding it (and that's dangerous, since the system firmware can remap devices as it sees fit).
