The IPC error can be ignored if operation is otherwise successful. It
is normal for forked operation -- each connection forks a new process
which exits after the connection finishes.
The log_unique option creates the log filename by simply concatenating
the argument and gridftp.pid.log, so you just need to add a trailing /.
It works this way so you can set a custom prefix for the log filename
-- for instance, you can set a frontend to log at
/var/log/gridftp/fronend- and a backend to log at
/var/log/gridftp/backend- and the resulting log files will be named
frontend-gridftp.pid.log and backend-gridftp.pid.log.
