run it with:
globus-gridftp-server -debug -p 5555 -d ALL
then telnet to port 5555 from the same machine to avoid any possible firewall issues and send the
output.

you need to run gridftp servers on the source and destination machines.
I recommend you use the latest version of our code. Ideally 4.2, but at
least 4.0.8
