I can find only one historical Globus reference to that error message, which claims the problem to be an "older java": http://www.globus.org/mail_archive/gt4-friends/2005/05/msg00246.html

What is your JAVA_HOME? What does java -version say? Is it being set/overwritten in the start-stop script?

Agg! I was apparently using gcj 1.4.2. I usually install the jdk with the same yum command line, but I guess I wasn't paying attention, and it somehow installed gcj rather than sun java. Maybe a mirror was down or something and yum got smart and installed GNU Java.

The oldest Globus mistake in the book!

Everything's working perfectly now that I have sun java installed. Thanks for the help.
