IIUC you are looking for "size-allocate"; "size-request" is emitted when widget is asked for preferred size, but "size-allocate" when it's told the actual allocation.
When I follow those steps: - maximize the window: size_request and size_allocate are both called - then reduce the window: none of them is called.
