Typically, you would use two cell renderers for this task. For example,
in a file browser, you might not have 1 column for the icon and another
for the filename, but instead you could pack the icon renderer AND
filename renderer into the column for a single column so that the
alignment works.

        col = gtk_tree_view_column_new();
        gtk_tree_view_column_set_title(col, "Filename");

        renderer = gtk_cell_renderer_pixbuf_new();
        gtk_tree_view_column_pack_start(col, renderer, FALSE);
        gtk_tree_view_column_set_attributes(col,
                        renderer,
                        "pixbuf",
                        FILE_ICON,
                        NULL);

        renderer = gtk_cell_renderer_text_new();
        gtk_tree_view_column_pack_start(col, renderer, TRUE);
        gtk_tree_view_column_set_attributes(col,
                        renderer,
                        "text",
                        FILE_NAME,
                        NULL);

        gtk_tree_view_append_column( GTK_TREE_VIEW
(panel->priv->tree_view), col);
