As I think about it, my knowledge of extending GTK really is out of date. So I'm not at all sure how to do in C anymore. But Vala still just might be the ticket. Emitted Vala code is supped to be directly usable from a C program. I know the LXDE folk are now using Vala to work on and extend their old C code.
