And, indeed, it is particularly in the sub-sub-sub menus where it is very handy to tear-off a menu to be used for a few minutes. I notice that gimp has no tooltips on its menu items - perhaps they were forced to abandon them when the Gtk developers decided to make them pop up uncontrollably fast as you move down a menu... I've worked around this "feature" in Denemo now by allowing people to press the f1 key while hovering on a menu item to bring up the (otherwise disabled) tooltip.
