My dillo puts in a gray background and that makes some of the edges look
quite horrible. Although the intersections seem kind of nice, I think
they will go too unclear if scaled down.

Very important point. Cutting down on detail, adding black or otherwise
contrasting outlines and smoothing the output a bit if rendering to
bitmap might help. And of course just testing against several different
background types and scale factors.
Then again, I would like the idea of having a vector format icon
available that either a preprocessor of some sort or the desktop system
or whatever renders to be shown on screen. So far that hasn't seemed to
catch fire. Then again, it seems bitmaps can be made to scale pretty
well these days.
