GLib is used because it's required by GTK+. This dependency might be removed in the future from the core. GLib is nice to get something started quickly but it doesn't really offer anything critical/important (at least nothing we would use) you can't easily do on your own. This is not a matter of re-inventing the wheel but freedom and indepedence. -- Christian
