Hello gtk-gnutella users and developpers,

This is an unusual message, and there will not be many messages like this
one sent to the list.

As you may (not) know, Gnutella is relying on Gnutella Web Caches to be able
to bootstrap into the network. This means that new clients which arrive
on the network without anything in their host cache contact the publicly
available and well-known caches.

Unfortunately, the amount of publicly available caches has dropped quickly
recently, and this means more burden on the remaining caches. The cascading
effect is starting to become dramatic and threatens the whole Gnutella Web
Cache system. This could mean the end of Gnutella's growth, as new people
will be unable to join the network if they don't know at least one address
of someone running a Gnutella node.

This is why I bought a linux virtual server yesterday, for 6 months.

It's hosted by www.quantact.com, and those are nice folks who offer a 10%
discount to open source developpers. I paid $76 for 6 months, and I got
a 64 MB vserver with 3 GB of disk space and 20 GB traffic per month.

This vserver is of course running a Gnutella Web Cache, one of the most
efficient web caches on Earth, developped by Christian Biere, also known
for his work on gtk-gnutella.

In 6 months, I will renew the contract if, AND ONLY IF, you show that you
care enough by donating money to the gtk-gnutella project. I encourage
you to donate via sourceforge, on the project's home page, but you may also
donate directly to me. The difference is that sourceforge is taking its
fair commission, and that 10% of the donations made on sourceforge go to
the EFF. But if you don't want to donate through SF, you can do so by
following the "Donate" link in the home page of the project's web.

All the money collected will be assigned to purchasing vservers. Depending
on the amount we get, we can envision buying another one. The more Gnutella
Web Caches, the less load there will be on existing ones. It is also fair
that we support this system, as a user group.

Please, if you care about the Gnutella network, consider supporting our
efforts to build an open and efficient P2P network.

And to those who already donated, please be certain that your money was
only spent to support the development activities, and not for my leisure
expenses (unless you consider that working on gtk-gnutella is a leisure
for me -- which it is to a certain extent).

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Raphael Manfredi
Gtk-Gnutella Project Leader.
