Empty labels are hard to select in glade unless you use the widget tree. The place holders certainly are also meant as documentation to indicate what will appear at this place. However, I don't think the latter is horribly important. If it's mostly about the "empty label problem", I'd suggest a single place holder string e.g., "[place holder]" or the like for all labels.
