I won't really answer your question but I use

./Configure -Oders -Dcc=/path/to/cc -Dccflags='-W -Wall -Wformat=2'
        -Doptimize='-O -g3' -Dgtkversion=2

I believe Configure does now pick those ccflags by default. If I
were a tid more lazy or needed more ccflags and ldflags, I'd put that
in a wrapper script in my PATH. I'd be shoqued if someone actually
used the interactive mode of Configure.
