I think you put too much importance on connect/disconnect.  At least
for a DSL user, these are completely useless.  I never disconnect
unless I exit the program.  I think I disabled the tool bar in the
current program.

One thing that was nice in older versions was that typing in a search
did not bring forward the search pane.  I like to cut and paste the
SHA values from the download screen to the search box.  It seems that
my downloads complete much faster if I do this.  The point for you
might be that sometimes the disparate activities inter-relate.  The
main functions for user would normally be searching and monitoring
download progress.  I think those are the "high use" areas of the
application.

The upload and GNET panes are useful, but currently they only provide
information.  Ie, the user doesn't really input anything there.  I
guess the "preferences" and "filter" screens are not often used, but
very important gui functions [with lots of user interaction].  You
might like to concentrate some efforts on polishing these screens.

I think it is pretty easy to make nice looking screens.  The trick is
to make them function well.  That is a pretty tough job.
